The Impact of a Classical Ceiling
In today’s home the ceiling is almost always ignored. Mostly it is painted flat white. The Classical concept of space is based on developing the volume of a room. Calling attention to the ceiling shows the shape and design of the room in a way no other element can and gives you that feeling of volume. The ceiling is the only uninterrupted surface in a room and offers great opportunities for ornamentation and decoration.
Ceilings fall into four main categories: flat, beamed, coffered, and vaulted. Flat ceilings are the most common in our homes today and offer a perfect surface (flat) to be richly decorated with ornament and/or paint as in skies or designs. There is nothing that creates a bigger impact than a beautifully designed ceiling.
This ceiling is a favorite of mine. The medallion is unusually large (87″L x 35″W x 1-1/4″ relief) and can be used with or without a chandelier.
Neutral color palette is just enough to call attention to the ceiling detail.
