New Classicism by Elizabeth Meredith Dowling focuses on thirty-four projects by the best classically oriented firms in the United States and Great Britain and continues my focus on classical architecture today. Although some of the work I just could not resist showing was not featured in the book but is by the architects showcased in the book such as the Garden Hall and Library in the Castle Howard by Julian Bicknell & Associates. In 1979 a new interior for the Garden Hall was designed and built in preparation for the filming of ‘Brideshead Revisited’. The design does not reproduce the original interior, but uses the early 18th Century vocabulary of Vanbrugh and Hawksmoor, with the linked keystones, band architraves and isolated pairs of columns, to make an impressive formal interior at the heart of this great house.
The original house had undergone such extensive deterioration that it could not be restored.
