Rundale Palace – Versailles of the Baltic
Rundale Palace was the location for the BBC miniseries War & Peace, starring Lilly James from Downton Abbey.
A client who loves the Baroque style wanted me to see the Throne Room/Gilded Room wall panels.
The panels are an amazing example of Scagliola. See my blog The Art of Scagliola Today. In addition to the scagliola panels, my client is interested in large ornament for her Great Room. The ornament is fabulous.
Rundale is considered the Versailles of the Baltic. The land was purchased in 1735 by Duke of Courland Ernst Johann von Biron for a summer residence. The Baroque palace was designed by Bartolomeo Rastrelli. Construction began in 1736, but proceeded slowly because part of the materials and resources were transferred to the construction of Jelgava Palace, a project which was more important for the duke.
Jelgava Palace or Mitava Palace is the largest Baroque-style palace in the Baltic states.
Today, Rundale Palace is one of the major tourist destinations in Latvia. It is also used for the accommodation of notable guests, such as the leaders of foreign nations. The palace and the surrounding gardens are now a museum.
The miniseries is so well done. Eight episodes in incredible rooms with gorgeous period costumes. Another wonderful room is White Hall.
White Hall underwent a 10 year renovation.
I found these great closeups of the plaster work.
So beautiful. The artistry is amazing. I am ready to visit. And there is more…..
Riga is the capital of Latvia. It is famous for some of the best Art Nouveau architecture in Europe.
Latvia is home to the widest waterfall in Europe: Ventas Rumba, at 110 m (360 ft) wide, though only 2 m high.
Riga is the birthplace of the Christmas tree (500 years ago).

Really love this hand painted garland. Subtle and elegant.
The ornament in this room is very unique.
